ARMOUR – DESIGN AND FABRICATION AND BLAST PROTECTION

Design and fit of armour protection for new and refurbished vehicles in steel, composites and ceramics (Left and Right Hand Drive).

COVERT ARMOUR PROTECTION SYSTEMS

Hobson Industries can support all close protection vehicle requirements and in the current environment, a discrete protection vehicle has its place in any fleet for providing occupant safety. With heightened threat levels worldwide and an increased need for armour in many urban situations, a conventional armour system is neither desirable nor practical.

Hobson Industries provide full design and development services for covert protection systems on any platform of choice giving consideration to serviceability within local markets. The 4x4 derived platforms are a specialty and have proven to be the most adaptable dynamically to absorb the installation of a protection system, however, we have very successfully developed solutions based around conventional passenger car platforms. To meet with the broad range of threat levels, we offer protections levels to STANAG Level 1 (B6) for all covert protection systems.

The protection system developed by Hobson uses high impact resistant armour plate, a versatile product which retains its original ballistic properties across a wide range of temperatures (-40°C to +50°C).

With our assembly methods, great consideration is given to through life serviceability and support and all components can be replaced or repaired in situ using local labour. The benefit of such processes permits the non-destructive removal of the protection system and improved residual values of decommissioned vehicles are a key factor for the modern fleet operator.

All protection systems are rigorously tested, in both ballistic and dynamic terms, to provide the very best solutions and we undertake development of bespoke chassis dynamics to suit the overall package.

APPLIQUE ARMOUR KIT

Hobson Industries has been upgrading and re-armouring Land Rover and other vehicles for International Military and Police customers since 1992. Weight constraints of the Land Rover chassis has focused Hobson’s attention on lightweight protective armour for ballistic and mine blast solutions.

The appliqué armour protection kit for the Land Rover provides ballistic protection to 180º plus and is specifically designed for a two man fit away from main support facilities. The kit requires no welding and is simply bolted on to the vehicle structure using the tools provided with the kit. It is designed with rapid deployment in mind and can be installed within 3 – 4 hours.

To aid serviceability and repairability, the armour protection kit components are individually codified, can be demanded ex-stock and comprises of:

Full front protection for the bulkhead, foot wells, windscreen up to the windscreen line to the existing vehicle hard top allowing the original hard top to be re-fitted.

Full driver and passenger door protection. Angular protection within the door support system gives protection to driver and passenger head for oblique angle impacts.

Driver and passenger seat shields covering the upper torso and head enhancing ballistic protection levels to the front occupants.

The transparent armour to the windscreen and driver and passenger doors has the provision for fitting mesh grills as a menu option.

The armoured steel is designed to defeat

• 7.62 x 39

• 7.62 x 54R

• 7.62 x 51 NATO

• The range of 5.56 munitions

In conjunction with Romag Ltd, Hobson Industries has developed a cassetted transparent armour system which can be changed in minutes between patrols and is interchangeable between the same vehicle types.

The kit is made of high impact resistant armour plate designed to retain ballistic properties operating in a temperature ranging from - 40º to +50ºC.

The armoured kit in its entirety is totally interchangeable between the same vehicle types and is designed to be flat pack air portable. All necessary tools and fitting instructions are supplied with each kit enabling flexibility of operational delivery, particularly beneficial to units that do not have workshop facilities to back up the unit operations.

The kit has full logistic and through life support and is available for fitment to RHD or LHD vehicle variants.

The personal weapons stowage and other standard fittings within the cab area are unaffected.

SPALL PROTECTION

Spalling, by definition, are flakes of a material that are broken off a larger solid body and can be produced by a variety of mechanisms, including as a result of projectile impact. Through an agreement with Paxcon Line-X USA, Hobson Industries has secured the UK rights for LINE-X for vehicle applications in Defence.

LINE-X Protective Coatings have a high "shore D" hardness rating, offering excellent impact resistance and superior tensile strengths (up to 6,600 psi) resulting in outstanding abrasion resistance. Because the material is sprayed there is a complete seal, making the coating "water tight".

BLAST PROTECTION

Hobson Industries is working with Advanced Blast and Ballistic Systems Ltd (ABBS) to develop complete protection against under-belly mine blast.

The vehicle selected for the Active Mine Protection System (AMPS) technology development is the ex-UK Army Snatch Land Rover 110 variant. This relatively light (4 ton) vehicle provides an excellent case study to demonstrate the effectiveness of ABBSs’ Active Mine Protection System technology. The low vehicle weight provides little resistance to global acceleration effects, and the low ground clearance and very shallow V belly plate enhances both the penetration and global acceleration effects of anti-vehicle mines and IEDs.

The current development programme will demonstrate complete protection against significant anti-vehicle under-belly mine blast levels with tests carried out  the STANAG 4569 AEP55 standard, illustrating that even very light vehicles such as civilian SUVs or VIP cars can be fully protected against substantial AV mines.

Final full scale testing of the systems will be completed during Autumn 2014. The systems are suitable for use on any vehicle size, from ultra-light Special Forces types, through civilian SUVs/VIP vehicles, mine clearance personnel transport vehicles, Light Patrol Vehicles, to large APCs or MBTs.
